Users are learning the hard way: if AI doesn't do what you tell it to, you're not going to get paid.

Newfoundland and Labrador just became one of the first provinces in Canada to put real guardrails around contractors using AI. All it took was a six-fingered photo and a $1.6M Deloitte report full of hallucinated citations to get there.

The province now requires vendors bidding on government work to disclose whether they plan to use AI, how they'll use it, and accept that the province can audit, modify, or outright deny that use. The trigger was a health-care HR plan prepared by Deloitte Canada that contained fabricated references, while a second flagged report carried similar errors.

As AI seeps into every consulting deck and RFP response across the country, who else is checking the footnotes? N.L. is now ahead of the curve on accountability and we can expect other provinces to follow, especially after a $1.6M sticker shock like this one.

There's plenty of news about China's rapidly growing solar and wind buildout, but they've also been getting serious about where all of that intermittent power goes. While nearly every greenfield pumped hydro storage project in North America's FERC pipeline is stuck in permitting or environmental review, China is currently bringing one of the world's largest pumped storage stations online. As of April 2026, three of the four units at the 1.7 GW Zhejiang Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station are now online, with the final unit scheduled to be operational by the end of June.

Hosted by the Ontario Waterpower Association, reliability and resilience were two of the main themes that kept emerging! As electricity demand continues to grow, hydropower operators are being asked to do more with existing equipment, upgrade their facilities, and even consider greenfield development.
