The Canada Energy Regulator recently released their latest supply and demand projections for 2050, which evaluated four scenarios for Canada’s energy future. All of the evaluated scenarios saw significant increases in electricity demand, ranging from 23% to 85% increases above 2023 levels. Electrification of transportation and new demand from data centres were identified as primary drivers of this trend.

A breakdown of the fuel mix of these hypothetical energy futures show that hydro is expected to continue its dominance, accompanied by significant wind development. Surprisingly, solar is projected to play a relatively limited role, despite the technology’s rapidly declining costs making it one of the lowest sources of energy currently available.

It looks like we’ll need to wait about 24 years to see how accurate any of these scenarios end up being!

The US Government has announced that payments of nearly $1B will be made to the French Company TotalEnergies to cancel leases for approximately 4 GW of offshore wind development off the eastern coast of the United States.

TotalEnergies is only one of several developers facing project cancellations as the current US administration makes a push for renewed fossil fuel development. These cancellations are coming as electricity demand is forecasted to rapidly increase and geopolitical events continue to disrupt fuel markets.

CEATI- Hydropower Conference 🌊 🌴

Last week out team headed to San Diego for the CEATI 2026 Hydropower Conference! Our presentation on leveraging model context protocol (MCP) for smarter hydropower operations received great feedback from the audience and led to some really great conversations both during the question period and throughout the remainder of the conference.
