Rocky Times for Wind Development on the Rock 🪨
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott announced the province is trimming its wind-to-hydrogen ambitions, extending the Crown land reserve for only one project while rescinding land rights from three others that either failed to show much progress or fell behind in paying their quarterly reserve fees. Time to put that Crown land back to work collecting moss!
America’s Grid Buildout Isn’t Hitting the Gas ☀️ 🛰️
The US EI is forecasting a record setting year for 2026, with 86 GW of new utility scale generating capacity expected to be added to the grid. Despite recent policy changes, wind, battery, and solar are expected to make up 93% of these additions, as developers continue to pair variable generation with batteries to enhance reliability and meet growing electricity demands.

Is the Weather Outside Frightful?
A look into Monday’s winter storm and snowpack levels in the Northeast 🌧️ ❄️
After record-breaking snowfall recently hit several regions across the northeast US and Canada, we were curious to see how the snowpack status in the major hydropower generating regions of Maine and New Brunswick compares with previous years! We asked the Erode Analyst to help us take a look at the current state of snow.
Although localized snowpack accumulation was heavy along the coast during the Feb 24th event, the majority of snow in the basin actually fell earlier around Feb 19th. Regionally snowpacks are still below average, but individual basins may be a different story!
Winter’s not over yet, so we will need to see what the next few weeks bring. Check out our the Erode Analyst’s insights below!

Peaks Over Threshold
Raise your kids to be good citizens, and minimize energy consumption during training and test-time compute 👶🏻 🤖
Sam Altman received some negative feedback last week when he compared the energy needed to train language models with how much energy is required to raise a human to the age of 20. These comments come as the AI data center boom has been raising questions about grid reliability and electricity prices across North America.

Human metabolism uses about 2-3 kWh of energy per day, so by ChatGPTs own estimate, that’s equivalent to generating somewhere between 2 and 17 minutes of a Sora video. Think of all the extra TikTok videos we could generate if people didn’t waste so much power!

Now that we’ve solved the alignment problem, the next step is to work on reducing carbon emissions by breathing less.

What’s New at Erode AI
Here’s What We’ve Been Up to Lately! 🤝 🙋🏻♂️
🇩🇪 Essen, Germany - E-world Energy and Water Conference
We travelled to Germany to take part in one of Europe’s largest energy conferences! During the event we had the chance to connect with companies from across Europe who are rapidly adapting to growing grid demands driven by electrification and the AI build out. Batteries continue to be one of the biggest stories, while wind, solar, and demand response are also hot!
